SKATES

SKATES

Your  skates are your working tools on the ice. A proper fitting and a well sharpened pair of skates can be the key to success on the ice!

Do not buy skates with too much growing room
. This can cause wobbly  ankles, tripping over toe picks, and breaking down of the boot. If the toe touches the end of an unlaced skate, you should have only a finger  width at the back of the heel.

Correct  skate sharpening
is essential to enhancing performance. Talk to Coach April to get your skates sharpened.

Wear skate guards when walking to and from the ice surface to protect the blades. Remember to take your guards off when you get on the ice.

After skating wipe your blades dry and put on soft covers for storage protection. Never store your skates with the guards on. This can cause rust.

Code of Conduct for Skaters and Parents

Kerry Park Skating Club (KPSC) is committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all skaters, coaches, volunteers, and families. The following Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for both skaters and their parents/guardians, in alignment with Skate Canada's Code of Ethics. All members are required to uphold the values of integrity, respect, safety, and fairness.

Expectations for Skaters

As a skater with Kerry Park Skating Club, I agree to:

1. Show Respect

  • Treat all coaches, officials, fellow skaters, volunteers, and staff with courtesy and respect.
  • Listen to and follow instructions from coaches and program assistants.
  • Demonstrate sportsmanship and team spirit at all times.

2. Practice Good Sportsmanship

  • Support and encourage other skaters.
  • Refrain from negative comments, gestures, or behavior on or off the ice.
  • Accept feedback and coaching in a positive manner.

3. No Bullying or Harassment

  • Bullying, harassment, discrimination, or exclusion of any kind—whether in person or online—is strictly prohibited.
  • Any such behavior may result in disciplinary action, including removal from programs.

4. Safety First

  • Be aware of surroundings while skating and follow proper etiquette (e.g., right-of-way rules).
  • Do not wear headphones or use cellphones on the ice.
  • Report unsafe behavior or equipment to a coach or board member immediately.

5. Be Prepared and Accountable

  • Arrive on time for sessions, properly dressed and with required equipment.
  • Warm up before skating and cool down afterward.
  • Take care of personal belongings and respect club property and facilities.

6. Use of Technology

  • No cellphone use on the ice at any time. Phones must be stored safely during skating sessions.
  • Use of devices to record video must be done only with coach permission and for training purposes.

  • Refrain from coaching or instructing from the sidelines.

2. Respect Coaches and Officials

  • Allow coaches to guide my child’s development and address concerns privately and respectfully.
  • Support club decisions and processes with patience and understanding.

3. Model Respectful Behavior

  • Speak and act respectfully toward all skaters, families, coaches, and volunteers.
  • Promote inclusion, kindness, and integrity within the club community.

4. Zero Tolerance for Bullying

  • Ensure that my child understands the importance of treating others with respect and kindness.
  • Report any incidents of bullying, harassment, or misconduct to the Club President or Safesport contact.

5. Use of Technology

  • Ensure that any video or photo taken during practices is used appropriately and with consent.
  • Do not post photos or videos of skaters (other than your own child) without permission.

Enforcement and Disciplinary Actions

Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary measures, which may include:

  • Verbal or written warnings
  • Temporary or permanent suspension from club activities
  • Referral to Skate Canada for further action

All reports of misconduct will be taken seriously and handled in confidence, according to KPSC and Skate Canada Safesport policies.
